We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Who We Are
Founded in 1996, Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada has granted over 1,700 wishes to children in Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln and Nye counties. Additionally, each year the chapter hosts nearly 40 children from other states and countries who wish to visit Las Vegas or meet celebrities performing in Las Vegas. That means our chapter is involved in granting a wish nearly every three days, and we do it with a small and committed staff as well as the collective strength of over 200 active volunteers to fulfill our mission. Our volunteers participate in all facets of our operations including fundraising, office support, special events, community relations, wish granting and governance. Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada is part of Make-A-Wish® America, whose network of chapters has granted more than 254,000 wishes since 1980. Today, a wish is granted every 35 minutes in the U.S.
In 2016, Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada will grant nearly 100 wishes in our community and assist with executing another 40 wishes for children from other areas of the country who come to Las Vegas to have their wishes granted. That’s 140 wishes – one wish almost every 3 days!
The power of wish® is undeniable:
97 percent of wish families and 96 percent of health professionals observed increases in wish kids’ emotional health.
98 percent of parents felt the wish experience gave them the opportunity to be a “normal” family again.
97 percent of volunteers reported feeling more grateful and thankful as a result of helping to grant a wish.
Average Wish Cost: $8,500
Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada has granted more than 1,700 wishes to date.
Four types of wishes: I wish to go… I wish to be… I wish to have…
I wish to meet…
Of every dollar donated to Make-A-Wish, 75 percent goes to wish granting. This exceeds program service allocation standards set forth by leading charity watchdog groups, including the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Make-A-Wish was one of the first charities to earn the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance Seal and has earned the highest rating, four stars, from Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier independent charity evaluator.
The 2010 EquiTrend® study from global market research firm Harris Interactive ranks Make-A-Wish as one of the top 10 charities in trust (No. 7), nonprofits people are most likely to support in the future (No. 8), and brand equity (No. 9).
