MYTH #1
KIDS HAVE TO BE TERMINAL
Kids do not have to be terminal to receive a wish. Our wish kids have been diagnosed with a progressive, degenerative or malignant condition that puts their life at risk. Many of our wish kids overcome their illness and go on to lead long, happy lives. Some, like Rebeca, even become our biggest advocates.
MYTH #2
KIDS MUST BE REFERRED BY A DOCTOR
We rely heavily on medical professionals like doctors, nurses, social workers and child-life specialists to refer children to Make-A-Wish. However, we accept referrals from others who feel they may know a child facing a life-threatening medical condition, including:
- Parents/legal guardians of the potential wish kid
- Family members with extensive knowledge the child’s current medical condition
- Potential wish kids
If you’d like to refer a child, please fill out an inquiry form.
MYTH #3
FAMILIES MUST BE ABLE TO AFFORD A WISH
Wish families pay nothing for their wish experience. From airline miles and construction services to limo rides and hotel stays, every aspect of a child’s wish is granted thanks to monetary and in-kind donations from generous individuals and businesses/corporations across the globe. We hope to give wish kids and their families one less thing to worry about, even if only for a little while.
MYTH #4
ALL WISHES INVOLVE TRAVEL
While many of our kids’ wishes take them to places like Disney World®, Hawaii and even Italy, many wishes take place right here in southern Nevada. Wishes tend to fall into four categories: I wish to have, I wish to be, I wish to meet and I wish to go. Discover how wish kid Connie's ultimate Las Vegas dream came true!
MYTH #5
GRANTING ONE CHILD’S WISH MEANS ANOTHER CHILD DOESN’T GET THEIR WISH
Since our foundation, we aim to grant the wish of every eligible child facing the fight of their life. We rely on the generosity and support of donors, volunteers and businesses/corporations to make wishes come true. To date, they have helped Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada grant more than 1880 wishes, and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
We hope this helped give you a better understanding of the wish process. If we missed anything, please feel free to leave us a question in the comment section!
