She was able to continue going to school, but her home life changed because of her medicine dose at every meal. Soon, she was introduced to her Wish Granters Richard and Paola; figuring out her wish was a “happy blur” as she didn’t know at first what to pick. Shortly, it became apparent that she was off to Disney World.
Of her wish, she said, “What an amazing time I had!” Her mother adds “The wonder I witnessed on her little face when she learned she was going to Disney World will never be forgotten.” Rebeca took in all of the rides—sometimes two or three times—and had breakfast with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. Besides visiting Disney World—where she became quite chummy with the Little Mermaid!—Rebeca also visited Sea World and Wet ‘N Wild. As Rebeca herself put it “Thank you to everyone who has touched my heart.”
But Rebeca’s story is not over. After learning that her best friend Daniela volunteers at a Make-A-Wish chapter in Texas, Rebeca decided to check out giving back to the organization she says gave her so much. Turning 21 this month, she is now a volunteer at Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada and serves as a Wish Granter. In looking at the multiple opportunities for involvement within the chapter, she decided to be a Wish Granter to be involved in the actual wish coming true.
Of the Wish Kids that she has worked with, she calls her experience “emotional” but is happy to work with them, because as a former Wish Kid herself, she understands what they are going through. “Knowing you could die is such a weird and sad feeling, especially for the young,” she says. “My wish was something special to look forward to…even if it was just to have a new topic at the dinner table. Taking my mind off of my illness was a gift.”
Recently, we surprised Rebeca by reuniting her with her Wish Granters, Richard and Paola. Thinking that she was at The Wishing Place for a wish-related meeting, she was speechless when her Wish Granters walked in. After announcing the surprise, the three became fast-friends reminiscing about her wish almost 9 years ago. Of reconnecting with Richard and Paola, Rebeca says, “It means the world to me…you've brought two beautiful people back into my life. We are planning on granting wishes together—I will be granting wishes with my very own fairy godparents. That is incredible.”
Paola says of the reunion, “To be reunited with Rebeca was a memorable moment that makes granting wishes even more magical for us. We are truly lucky to be wish granters.” If you would like to learn more about becoming a Wish Granter or exploring other volunteer opportunities, please click here.
