Norma Ellis began volunteering with Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada after she realized her friend Barbara Tapp was also our Chief Operating Officer. She had always heard about the amazing things we were doing for children battling critical illnesses, so she decided it was time to discover the magic.
Norma started volunteering with our office staff, who works behind the scenes to help wishes come true. At first she thought seeing the kids going through their struggles was going to be too sad, but as she got more involved she discovered that being around wish kids and their families actually filled her with joy! Before she knew it, she had become a wish granter and was also helping with events, including our annual Walk For Wishes® Presented by Allegiant. In fact, Norma claims her first time volunteering at Walk For Wishes in 2017 has been the most impactful part of her time with us so far. She was so moved by how the sponsors, donors and other volunteers all came together for wish kids and their families.
“The wish kids and their families are so happy to be there, and they are so appreciative of all the work and funds raised by the event,” Norma said. “Even the kids who’ve already had their wishes come back year after year to participate, some grow up and volunteer to make wishes come true for others! Now that is a true testament to the cause.”
Our upcoming Walk For Wishes at Town Square Las Vegas will be her second-time volunteering at the event and she can’t wait to see the community come together again to help wishes come true. But what she is really excited about is completing her first wish as a wish granter. A lot goes into making dreams come true for our wish kids, but she says the sense of happiness she feels knowing she’s bringing happiness and joy to a child battling a critical illness makes her want to help even more.
We love all of our volunteers and everything they do to support our mission. If you join us at Walk For Wishes coming up on March 10, make sure to say hi to Norma!
