At 11-years-old, Kendal had to face more than her fair share of adversity. An avid dancer who dreams of one day working in the entertainment industry, she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma in the beginning of 2013.
Tragically, Kendal had to have her right eye removed prior to six long months of chemotherapy. Despite these circumstances, Kendal held her head high and remained brave in the face of a struggle.
When it came to her wish, Kendal had no doubt about her one true wish. She wanted to be a celebrity correspondent at the iHeartRadio Music Awards to interview celebrities on the red carpet. Coincidentally, 2014 was to be the inaugural year of the iHeartRadio music awards held on May 1st at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and Kendal was invited! Her wish began to take shape and promised to be everything she had hoped for.
The day before the awards show, a limo picked up Kendal and her family to take them to the airport; the adventure was beginning. They were all very excited to find their hotel in Los Angeles was right next to Santa Monica Pier, but that was just the beginning. The day after they arrived it was shopping day with a personal shopper at Macy’s. Kendal picked out two outfits complete with shoes and accessories. The morning of the awards show, a personal stylist came to the hotel for hair and make-up for Kendal and her Mom. Kendal was finally ready for her big moment!
A limo picked up the family and took them to the Shrine Auditorium. First up, a tour of the entire theatre, seeing where the stars would be on stage and the chairs labeled with celebrity names.
Then the moment Kendal had been waiting for – the RED CARPET… Kendal was assigned a celebrity escort and they set up on the red carpet for some practice interviews. Once the stars arrived, there wasn’t anyone Kendal couldn’t interview! Kendal had her pick of who she wanted to meet. She interviewed Billy Rae Cyrus, Imagine Dragons, Jared Leto, Austin Mahone, Juicy J, a group from X factor and more. Her family was with her on the red carpet and her brother even got to join her in an interview with Little John. When asked about her favorite interview, she was quite sure; Imagine Dragons, a local Las Vegas band who have just made the big time-they shared a Las Vegas bond.
Through the help of Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada and Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles, Kendal’s wish was truly a dream come true. This is one experience that Kendal is sure to remember for the rest of her life.
"I’m lucky because I still have one eye left to see with. Some kids…have both of their eyes taken out because of this cancer and they can’t see at all, but [I have] one eye and I can see. I’m very lucky."-Kendal
