Food and Community; How they go hand in hand

Maggiano's 480x239
As we get ready to celebrate our country’s independence with burgers, hot dogs and other summertime snacks, I started to think of how food and community seem to go hand in hand. More than fifty years ago, my parents immigrated from Italy. Like most Italians, they believed that food solves everything, so it’s not surprising I grew up in a household where problems—big and small—were discussed around the dining table.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how the rituals of preparing and sharing food have followed me into adulthood and how deeply connected they are to the Make-A-Wish mission, which is so much about hope.

Food and hope: both nourish, strengthen and sustain us. Both provide comfort during difficult times.

I want to share with you just a few examples of the important role food plays in the wish granting experience, and highlight some of our amazing partnerships with the local food industry.

Pizza Hut 480x239

During a 45-day campaign, Pizza Hut raised $20,000 by donating $1 from special pizza packages to Make-A-Wish. Wish Kids Kaila and Becky were our campaign champions and were so excited to be featured in Pizza Hut’s promotional posters!

California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) also provides assistance to Make-A-Wish through its Roundup Program. Customers are given the option of rounding up their check to the next whole dollar amount, with those proceeds going to for Make-A-Wish. They also sponsor give back days, when they donate 20% of the day's sales to Make-A-Wish. Additionally, CPK hosts many wish reveals, caters our Volunteer Appreciation Night, and sponsors special events including medical outreach, volunteer trainings, and donor meetings.

Raising Cane's 480x239

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers raised $55,000 through its Dollar Day Campaign, where customers had the option to donate a dollar to Make-A-Wish at the register. Our Board Chair Tom Burns, Wish Kids Kaila, Alexa, Hailey, and I had so much fun promoting the campaign and thanking customers by working in drive-thrus around town! Raising Cane’s is also sponsoring our 100 Degrees Summer campaign with Channel 13. During the summer months (Memorial Day - Labor Day), Raising Cane’s will donate $100 to Make-A-Wish for each day that reaches 100 degrees (bring on the heat wave!).

Spago 480x239

For fifteen years, Spago has hosted Make-A-Wish’s Fashion Show Luncheon—our second largest annual fundraiser—by donating its beautiful restaurant as well as food and beverages. Each year, Wish Kids come to the restaurant for a special photo shoot complete with making something delicious and fun with their amazing chefs. Our Wish Kids love giving back to the organization that brought them so much hope and happiness. Being in a photo shoot and eating yummy food seems like a great way to Wish It Forward.

Maggiano's 480x239

As I write this, Wish Kid Veronica is returning from Italy thanks to Maggiano’s. Not only is Maggiano’s fully sponsoring Veronica’s trip, but they also hosted her wish reveal and named one of their private dining rooms after her! Maggiano’s has hosted many other reveals and donated countless delicious meals for our wish kids and families over the years. They also offer an “Eat a Dish for Make-A-Wish” special menu available now through August 2nd, the proceeds of which benefit Make-A-Wish.

This summer when you’re dining out or planning other fun activities, please consider supporting a business that supports our mission. Click here to view a complete list of our corporate partners. Nothing’s more delicious than knowing you’re making our community a better place!

Grazie e Buon Appetito!
