Walk For Wishes® is a nationwide Make-A-Wish® fundraiser that celebrates the more than 300,000 wishes that have already been granted - more than 2,000 in Southern Nevada alone! - while raising funds for future wishes. Once again, wish kids, families, volunteers, runners, walkers, and even four-legged furry friends came together in the early morning hours at Town Square Las Vegas to participate in this year's event.
After picking up their "Walk with Me, Wish with Me" participant t-shirts, attendees gathered on the The Green for the opening ceremony. Kim & Dana Wagner from KSNV News 3 played host again this year, sharing how important events like Walk For Wishes are for the Las Vegas community. The Wagners were then joined on stage by Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada's president and CEO, Caroline Ciocca, who expressed her gratitude to the crowd.
“Thank you, Southern Nevada. With the unwavering support of our wish families, incredible volunteers, and friends, we are able to change the lives of so many children who need our help,” said Ciocca. “This is the one event that brings all of us together. Today, you decided to ‘walk with me, wish with me!’ Because of you, we have the fuel we need for the rest of the year. For that, I am forever grateful.”
Before participants headed to the starting line, they got to experience the power of a wish® in person during a surprise wish reveal for a deserving young girl, Faith.
With this year's wish kid ambassadors on stage, the Wagners asked the crowd to shout out their one true wish as loud as they could. Hundreds of kids cheered and exclaimed their wishes out loud, but Kim exclaimed that one voice was louder than the rest - Faith's! The surprised seven-year-old grinned, hurried to the stage, and was told her one true wish to go to the Walt Disney World® Resort was coming true, just as blue and white balloons dropped to the stage in celebration.
Once the ceremony concluded, it was time to Walk For Wishes! Walkers and runners gathered at the starting line waiting for the official signal to start. Teams decked out in colorful t-shirts, strollers, dogs, kids, and people holding posters in support took over the streets of Town Square. Mix 94.1's Mercedes and JC cheered the walkers on from the Mix Stage as volunteers holding posters and pom poms provided support throughout the designated course. And, as participants reached the finish line, princesses, superheroes, police officers, fire fighters and mascots were waiting to congratulate them on a job well done. Hugs were given by family members, and people hurrahed as they completed the walk.
Then, the fun continued as the crowd made their way over to the wish zones for special activities, booths, food, and giveaways provided by our amazing community partners, including presenting sponsor Allegiant. There was no shortage of excitement as kids and parents alike enjoyed a petting zoo, painting station, photo booth, and so much more!
“It truly is a joy to see so many families not only coming out to support Make-A-Wish but having such an enjoyable time with their loved ones,” said Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada's Board Chairman, Tom Burns. “Seeing the smiles and laughter coming from our wish kids puts everything we do in perspective. To come together as a community and celebrate the work we do is truly special.”
Thank you to the amazing community partners, wish kids, volunteers, staff, and attendees who made this event possible. Because of you, we surpassed our fundraising goal, raising almost $500,000 to continue to grant wishes for every eligible child in Southern Nevada.
