Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

The first step is to complete our online Volunteer Application. Once we receive your application, we will contact you with the next steps including how to sign-up for our volunteer orientation.

What type of training do volunteers receive?

All volunteers are required to attend our General Volunteer Orientation session in order to better understand the organization and their role as a volunteer. Additional training is also mandatory for most of our wish-related roles.

Do you have volunteer positions that are not emotionally demanding?

Some people would like to help because they relate to our mission, but would prefer little or no direct involvement with the families. The roles that might be the most appropriate for these individuals are Special Events, Airport Greeters and Office help. All our volunteer positions contribute equally to our mission, and bring joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions and their families.

Do I have to live in Las Vegas?

No. Though most wishes are granted in the metro areas of the state, we still need help in all out-lining counties we oversee. As you complete your volunteer application, please note if you are willing to travel outside of the city you live. We appreciate this as we do not currently have a Make-A-Wish® representative in each county.

Do I need a background check?

To ensure the safety of our wish kids, we perform a national criminal background check on applicants interested in most volunteer positions. We perform this background check through First Advantage.

The cost of each background check can vary and is dependent upon where you have previously resided. We do ask that the volunteer cover this cost which is typically about $25. You must be 18 years or older to volunteer in a position that requires a background check.

All information in the volunteer application, and any acquired through the background check, remains confidential and is used only for screening and placement purposes.

If a blemish appears on a background check it may be reviewed by our management team to determine if acceptance of a volunteer application is in the Chapter's best interest.

Are there time commitment requirements for your volunteers?

Whether you have a few free hours each week or a few days each month, we have opportunities that can fit into your schedule. Commitment levels vary, depending on your volunteer position. You may choose to become heavily involved or you may sign up for special events one at a time as you’re able. We do expect a high level of commitment and professionalism from our volunteers.
