Jimmy is a survivor of Stage IV colorectal cancer. During treatments, he could barely walk, but is now doing amazing and is cancer free. As a result of his experience, he started volunteering with the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation and The Caring Place, two organizations that did so much to help him through his own cancer journey. By volunteering, Jimmy realized that helping others was also helping him heal, and his volunteer service grew. Luckily for us, he found his way to Make-A-Wish®.
How did you first get involved with Make-A-Wish?
Two years ago, I was working an event and another volunteer suggested that I might enjoy being a wish granter and recommended that I check into volunteering at Make-A-Wish. I followed the suggestion and contacted Make-A-Wish. I was soon volunteering at Make-A-Wish and fell in love with the organization and the wish kids that I worked with.
What experience or wish has been most impactful for you?
Sultan’s Wish. All my wish experiences have been impactful, but more so with Sultan, as I got to spend so much time with him. Sultan taught me so much. When I had bad days, all I had to do was hang out with Sultan. Despite what Sultan was going through, he always met me with a smile and a hug. Seeing the joy Sultan had for life despite what he deals with on a daily basis helped me forget about my bad days.
Sultan has given me enough hugs to lifetime! His family is also phenomenal! The love and gratitude they expressed to Make-A-Wish and to me has been amazing. They have even made me an honorary member of their family!
What do you wish other people knew about Make-A-Wish?
How it impacts the child, the families, and me as a volunteer. I had no idea how strongly volunteering with Make-A-Wish would impact my life and touch my heart. It also has a huge impact on the community. Just mention “Make-A-Wish” and people immediately respond with, “What can I do to help?”
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I am an Interior Designer (loved doing the Spiderman mural for Sultan!) and a Chef. I love to cook for my neighbors and friends. I also enjoy spending time with family and my dog Nikalus!
If you could say one word about your experience with MAW, what would it be?
Heartfelt. You think you know what a great experience it will be to volunteer with Make-A-Wish; but you don’t realize until you become involved in a child’s wish just how much it will touch your heart. Heartfelt in that these wishes touch the child, the families, the staff, the community, and the volunteers in ways you never knew they could.
Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada® relies on dedicated volunteers, like Jimmy, to help grant the wishes of children battling critical illnesses in our community. Click here to learn more about our many volunteer opportunities and to sign-up for our next Volunteer Orientation.
