Nothing means more to 13-year-old Xavier than basketball. Although his heart condition - double outlet right ventricle - does have its limitations, Xavier wholeheartedly believes anyone can do anything they put their mind to. If his two top aspirations do not work out - to be a psychiatrist or LeBron James - Xavier hopes to find himself leaving behind a legacy that will encourage others to feel that nothing can hold them back either.
As Xavier learned more about what Make-A-Wish is, his mind immediately went to basketball. While he first wanted to meet LeBron for his wish, he decided on something more practical – a shopping spree. And who better to reveal his wish than Las Vegas’ own basketball team, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. Xavier and his family were brought to the Thomas & Mack Center in a limousine and given a tour of the facility, including the famed Mendenhall Center where USA Basketball and NBA Summer League call home. After watching the end of UNLV’s practice, the Runnin’ Rebels came over to Xavier, led by head coach Marvin Menzies, to announce that Xavier’s wish was coming true. When Xavier saw his name and image on the videoboard, a huge smile crossed his face. His wish was coming true!
On his wish, Xavier geared up, picking out clothes and new shoes that will allow him to perform on the court, as well as video games that will allow him to continue to play when his condition prevents it. He even brought a basketball with him on his wish so he could show off his moves!
