At the age of 6, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I was at the age where I did not truly understand the gravity of the situation. But I knew from the looks of concern from those around me that life would be changing very quickly. My soccer games turned into doctor’s visits, time playing hide and seek was now filled with chemotherapy treatments. At this time Make-A-Wish came into my life. They took me away from my everyday… to the “happiest place on earth”, Disney World. It was one week that me and family forget about any kind of sickness. I was just another kid again. And for that, I could not be more thankful for.
I have now been cancer free for over 20 years! During that time I started playing soccer again. I played at Yavapai Junior college where we won a national title in 2003. After two years, I went on to play division 1 collegiate soccer for the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where I received a bachelor’s of Science in Business Finance. I recently reconnected with the local Make-A-Wish chapter when they reached out to my company to host a wish. I jumped at the chance to give back. Now I hope to continue my involvement with the organization as an ambassador to show my gratitude for everything they do.
